SHORELINE
Shrieking in celebration, the Edmonds-Woodway tennis team mobbed teammates Priscilla Huang and Allison Waugh after stunning defending league champion Shorewood on April 30.
The duo’s victory at No. 3 doubles over Shorewood’s Ari McInnes and Lisa Hamman clinched the Western Conference South Division meet for the Warriors, 4-3.
It meant the end of a 45-meet win streak by Shorewood (13-1) that dated back to 2005 and put the Warriors (14-1) in first place by a half-game.
“It feels great,” Huang said. “I feel so happy. I feel a lot of pressure is taken off.”
Huang and Waugh won the first set 6-4 after trailing 4-3. They fell behind 4-3 in the second set but once again rallied to win it 6-4.
“We played the net better and hit better volleys than we usually do,” Huang said.
Edmonds-Woodway hopes to earn at least a share of the Wesco South title or perhaps win it outright if they beat Jackson at home today at 3:45 p.m.
“We still have Jackson on Friday,” Huang said. “Not done yet.”
Shorewood beat Edmonds-Woodway 5-2 the first time the two teams played.
Edmonds-Woodway’s No. 2 singles player, freshman Amanda Waldron (13-2), beat Shorewood’s Anna Chatilo 6-3, 6-2. Chatilo handed Waldron her first loss of the season back on April 2.
“Amanda played really well,” Crist said. “That’s one of the matches we lost before.”
Waldron improved to 13-2 for the season and attacked the net with her forehand.
“I think I’ve gotten a lot better in the past eight (matches) we’ve played,” Waldron said. “I felt really good today. I was not making as many unforced errors. I just didn’t miss.”
The Warriors also picked up wins from Lindsay Clark over Danielle Kim 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Emily Hedman over Brie Fulghum-Behen 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
“These guys have worked really hard,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Dan Crist said. “I think we’ve gotten better since the last time we played them.”
The Thunderbirds’ Barbara Odell and Stephanie Lim beat Lexie Miller and Sheridan Smalley, 6-2, 6-1.
Odell played singles much of the year but recently moved over to doubles with Lim.
“We play good together,” Odell said.
Shorewood’s Kari Fiske ran her record to 14-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of E-W freshman Michelle Nelson in the No. 1 singles match.
Shorewood’s Elle MacGeorge and Seneca Shafer came back to beat Alaina Nelson and Esther Ham, 6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. That evened the meet at three matches apiece.
But despite the comeback by the T-birds, they couldn’t rally to win and extend the streak like they did against Shorecrest April 19.
“You lose to a good a team,” Shorewood coach Arnie Moreno said. “We didn’t come out as sharp as we wanted to in the singles. That was the big difference.”
Moreno gave the T-birds a pep talk afterward and focused their attention to the next match at third-place Jackson on Wednesday, which was played after Enterprise deadlines. The T-birds host Meadowdale today at 3:45 p.m. at Shoreview Park in the final meet of the season.
“I kind of reminded them we had a great run,” Moreno said. “By no means has anyone won a championship yet.”
