In the past quarter-century, 13,944 members of the Washington Service Corps have performed 18,535,458 hours worth of work throughout Washington. That is nearly 84.6 hours of service for every hour of those 25 years. The Washington Service Corps was created by the state legislature in 1983 to provide people with the opportunity to serve others and address crucial community needs. The program became the model on which the federal AmeriCorps was later patterned. The Washington Service Corps started with 200 members and is growing by more than 700 members a year, who are placed individually or on teams. Members provide tutoring to students and adults, work on environmental restoration and community revitalization projects, build homes for the needy, and assist with disaster planning and cleanup, among other things. In the past 10 years alone, 141,883 school-age students have been tutored.
