People filing for unemployment should beware of a consumer scam that preys on unemployed workers with an offer to help file their claim for a service charge. People attempting to visit the state’s online job search engine at www.go2worksource.com may accidently mistype the Web site’s URL as 2worksource.com. This will take them to a different Web site that charges them $9.95 to file their unemployment claims.
Claimants receive an e-mail acknowledging their fee has been charged to the person’s credit cards. The Washington State Employment Security Department cannot determine whether these unemployment claims have been filed, unless the department is contacted by the claimant.
The department advises people to use the official esd.wa.gov Web site to file their claims. The service is free and secure. People who have paid a third party to file unemployment claims can file a complaint at www.atg.wa.gov or call the state Attorney General’s Consumer Resource Center at 1-800-551-4636 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
