Twelve athletes from the West Coast Aquatics Swim Team in Mill Creek competed at the Speedo Western Sectional Championship Meet in Phoenix on March 9-12.
Despite swimming in unseasonably cold weather, West Coast placed 24th out of 150 teams. Individual standouts included Mill Creek residents Amber McDermott (age 12), who placed 16th in the mile and Stephanie Ha (age 15), who was 24th in the 100 butterfly.
Shoreline resident Brian Michaels (age 15) placed 16th in the 1,000 freestyle and 23rd in the 500 freestyle. West Coast swimmers broke five team records and Amber McDermott set a new Pacific Northwest Swimming record for 11-12 year olds in the 1,000 Freestyle with a time of 10:22:03, which places her second in the nation.
