Where we end up is our decision

Mr. Boonstra’s vindictive, conditional-love God is just the sort of God that has inspired religious atrocity for millennia. (Enterprise, Feb. 22) Although the Bible says unbelievers are damned, it doesn’t say God doesn’t love them as well. It does suggest that where we end up is up to us.

Of course some sects would dispute that, citing other scripture saying everything’s pre-ordained, that there is no choice. Still others would dispute other pieces. Vehemently. There is endless opportunity in the Bible for in-your-face exegesis, and an endless supply of folks under the various banners of Heaven who stand poised to take those opportunities.

Then there are a few others. The poor in spirit, the meek and the merciful, for instance. I don’t claim to be among them, but I do feel a responsibility to try to give them space to be, and to be heard. They’re almost unnoticeable amid the noise of the vocally righteous.
