Shorecest senior diver Ben Wilcox placed fourth in diving to highlight the Scots’ weekend at the state 3A swimming and diving championships, Feb. 20-21 at the King County Aquatic Center.
Wilcox finished with an 11-dive score of 308.35 to earn the first diving medal in Shorecrest history.
Teammate Reyes McElmurry finished 11th in diving with a score of 262.65.
On the swimming side of the meet, Shorecrest did not advance anyone to the finals, but sophomore Ryan McMahon finished first in the consolation finals of the 500 freestyle and ninth overall with a time of 4:50.22.
Shorecrest finished 18th as a team with 30 points.
With a young team this year, the Scots focused on winning the 3A District 1 meet, coach Bill Murray said.
“All in all, they swam really well, especially since we really focused on with the team we had this year, districts,” Murray said. “We knew that we could perform well there so we did a full taper and rest for that meet and just tried to hold on for this meet.”
“It’s a young group so we got a lot of free experience which is always nice,” Murray said. “A lot of kids got to see and visualize what it’s all about and what it takes. So hopefully that is something they can build on for next year as they get older and stronger.”
