Archbishop Murphy freshman guard Shelby Lynman knocked in four 3-pointers and scored a team high 15 points in a 49-36 road loss to non-league opponent Lynden Christian in girls basketball on Dec. 16.
After falling behind by more than 10 points in the fourth quarter, Lynman sank a 3-pointer with three minutes remaining in regulation to narrow the Wildcats’ deficit to seven points.
“I am really pleased with the way we played tonight,” Wildcats coach John Barhanovich said. “Lynden Christian is the state runner-up from last year and they returned a lot of their players. We’re a young team so I consider this a great learning experience. I’d rather lose a game against a top team then beat a less-talented team by 30 points.”
The Wildcats, who entered the game with an overall record of 2-0, which included a victory over Class 4A Kamiak on Dec. 5, found themselves trailing 8-0 in the first quarter. They answered, however, by going on a 10-2 run to tie the score at 10 to end the first quarter.
Freshman forward Sam Pettinger and sophomore forward Alyssa Smith chipped eight and seven points respectively for the Wildcats.
Lynden Christian pulled away in the second half, outscoring Archbishop Murphy 33-19. The Wildcats made just 1-for-7 from the free throw line in the final 16 minutes of regulation and finished the game converting just 7-17.
“They were just better than us in the second half,” Barhanovich said. “My one concern was our free throw shooting. If we would have made a few more shots maybe we would have been in the game better.”
The Wildcats plays Granite Falls on Jan. 5 in their Cascade Conference home opener.
