Jared Smith and JD Melton were a combined 9-for-12 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter as Archbishop Murphy pulled away from South Whidbey for a 60-50 victory in a 2A District 1 tournament game Feb. 26 at Mount Vernon High School.

South Whidbey’s Parker Barnett led all scorers with 20 points.

The Wildcats had lost twice to South Whidbey during the regular season before eliminating the Falcons from the district tournament. Archbishop Murphy was scheduled to play a winner-to-state/loser out game against Cedarcrest on Feb. 28, after The Enterprise’s deadline. Those two schools split their regular-season series, each winning on its home floor. Archbishop Murphy is seeking its first 2A state berth. The Wildcats previously went to state as a 1A school.

In earlier games, Burlington-Edison, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A in the final Associated Press poll, jumped to a 46-18 halftime lead over Archbishop Murphy and sailed to a 2A District 1 boys basketball playoff victory on Feb. 22. Jake Anderson scored 31 points for the Tigers while Dylan Healow led the Wildcats with 11 points and three 3’s.

On Feb. 20, Melton grabbed 13 rebounds and Archbishop Murphy outscored Bellingham 27-8 in the second quarter to win a 2A District 1 game at Archbishop Murphy High School. Joey Clancy scored all 10 of his points in the second quarter and Devon Fleming added eight of his 15 points.
