Winter arts await

The holiday season may be over, but local performing arts groups are getting into the full swing of their 2008 performance schedules. Here’s what coming up:

Driftwood Players

• Feb. 8-24, “The Diary of Anne Frank.” 13-year-old Anne Frank’s diary takes audiences on a intimate journey of the particulars of living in hiding during the Nazi regime of WWII.

• 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, Seattle Jazz Singers. This special Valentine concert is not part of Driftwood’s regular season. Individual tickets are $20.

• 8 p.m. Tuesday &Wednesday, Feb. 19 &20, “The Vagina Monologues.” Eve Ensler’s much talked about play is presented by The VaWa Sisterhood as a fundraiser for the Intervention Center for Assault &Abuse. This special performance is not part of Driftwood’s regular season; individual tickets are $20.

• Feb. 17-25, “Chicks.” A comical depiction of a Kindergarten teacher on the edge who is obsessed with telling it like it is to the audience … her “students.”

Cascade Symphony Orchestra

Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. Mondays, at the Edmonds Center for the Arts, 410 4th Ave. N., Edmonds. Season tickets are available; call 425-776-4938.

• Jan. 14, “Great German Romantic.” A program of Prokofiev, Valse Suite, op. 110; Milhaud, Concerto for Marimba &Vibraphone; and Brahms, Symphony No. 2, featuring Matt Kocmieroski, percussion. Tickets: $20 adults, $15 seniors &students, available by calling 425-776-4938.

• 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, “Tubby the Tuba.” CSO’s 2nd annual Children’s Concert features Dave Brewer on tuba and narrator Dave Dolacky. Free tickets are available for children 12 and under.

Shoreline-LFP Arts Council Children’s Series

• 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, Rhys Thomas’s “Jugglemania.” See it to believe it: Thomas juggles blades, spins breakable ceramic plates and bowls and uses unconventional items for gravity defying fun, at the Shoreline Community College Campus Theater, 16101 Greenwood Ave N, Bldg 1600, Shoreline.

• 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs” and “The Stinky Cheese Man.” Book-It Theatre presents two classic fairy tales, fractured before your eyes in author Jon Scieszcka’s unique style, at the Shorecrest Performing Arts Center, 15343 25th Ave. NE, Shoreline. Appropriate for ages K-6.

• 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, “Northwest Bookshelf 2 – The Story Continues.” 5th Ave. Theatre presents this new musical about six children who visit their local library searching the shelves for the perfect book, at Shoreline Community College Campus Theater, 16101 Greenwood Ave N, Bldg 1600, Shoreline

• Jan. 19, “Jazz It Up!” Tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb joins local middle and high school jazz musicians and the Shoreline School District’s Friends and Faculty All Star Big Band in this benefit concert for the Arts Council’s Scholarship Fund. Tickets are $18 general, $15 seniors &students.

• Feb. 23, David Boxley and the Git-hoan Native Dance Group. Tickets are $18 general, $15 seniors &students.

• March 22, Shawn Mullins. Tickets are $22 general, $18 seniors &students.

Shoreline-LFP Arts Council Readers’ Theater Series

Now in its third season, the Readers’ Theater series has served as a resource to bring together actors, readers and playwrights in an entertaining and educational environment. Performances are 7 p.m. Mondays at the Shoreline Center, Aurora Room, 18560 1st Ave. NE, Shoreline. Admission is free and the playwright will be available for discussion following the reading.

Olympic Ballet Theatre

• 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, “Peter and the Wolf” and “Carnival of the Animals.” Kids dance for kids in this narrated production, which also features a behind the scenes introduction to the magic of theatre, presenting scenery, costumes, lighting, masks and props. • 7 p.m. Saturday, April 19, “Giselle.” Love brings together a young peasant girl and a charming aristocrat visiting during a hunting party in this dramatic ballet. Tickets are $30 for adults, $20 for seniors/students and $15 for children 10 and under.
