A woman who told police she was raped by a stranger as she slept in a Lynnwood apartment late Aug. 10 now says the incident didn’t happen.
The woman, 18, had reported that she’d been raped by a man who entered her apartment complex in the 18500 block of 36th Avenue West and spent a “significant” amount of time with her before leaving, according to Lynnwood police spokeswoman Shannon Sessions.
But as detectives delved into the case, the alleged victim “admitted the sexual assault had not occurred,” Sessions said.
“We’re unclear as to why she made up the story, but she provided a statement that she did not intend for things to get this far and that this entire incident did not occur,” she said.
Police will forward the case to the Snohomish County Prosecutors Office to review possible false reporting charges, she added.
