Students at Woodway Elementary School spent three months last spring giving their school a face lift.

With the help of local artist Marsha Saamuli, the students were able to create an elaborate ocean scene featuring their school’s mascot, the dolphin.

“I painted the dolphins and background ocean,” said Saamuli. “The kids and staff members painted all of the ocean critters — 701 critters in all.”

Saamuli sat down with the children individually to coach them through the painting of their critter.

“I helped them paint by saying shapes that they recognized,” said Saamuli. “They were so excited to watch their critters come together.”

Close to 300 students in grades preschool through six and more than 25 staff members contributed to the mural.

“The kids really did it on their own,” said Saamuli. “I think it turned out to be beautiful.”
