Woodway resident Linda Wilmer saw a challenge and went with it.

Wilmer volunteered to update Woodway’s logo while following staff’s direction to keep trees in the design.

“It still needed to be classic yet creative,” she said.

Wilmer co-owns Wilmer Communications, an Edmonds-based marketing firm. Branding for cities is one of its specialties.

Wilmer presented her design ideas to the council last week which were met with mainly enthusiasm. She and staff had been working on updating the city’s logo for approximately six months.

Both ideas feature two trees but differ on the shapes of the trees. The council saw what business cards, stationery and envelopes could look like. She also toyed with colors by showing the trees as black on white, white on black, dark green on bright green and white on green.

Wilmer told the council she realizes change can be difficult and she isn’t rushing for a decision on a new logo.

“Change does take time. You have a lot of people to please,” she said.

Councilman Bill Anderson said the design on the current logo is outdated.

“It’s okay but it doesn’t strike me,” Anderson said.

Councilman Mike Quinn said simplifying the logo to two trees helps make it look “clean and crisp.”

“It’s good to refresh things,” Quinn said.

Mayor Carla Nichols said the current logo doesn’t provide a fresh image of the community.
