Welcoming writers with all levels of experience, the 19th Annual Write on the Sound Writers’ Conference opens Oct. 2 for a weekend of insight into the craft of writing.

Presented by the Edmonds Arts Commission, the conference program includes workshops, keynote address by Diana Abu-Jaber, manuscript consultations, readings, and networking opportunities. Over the two days, 32 different workshops will be offered, exploring in-depth how to write successful novels, learn more about poetry, nonfiction, and plays, and how to get work published.

The annual conference gives writers the opportunity to gain new perspectives on their work, meet other writers, and participate in workshops that provide tools and exercises to spark creative energy. A pre-conference schedule of writing critique workshops, the Convergence Writers Series, is offered by Edmonds Community College on Friday, Oct. 1. These workshops provide an opportunity for small group analysis of an individual’s work.

Awards for the conference writing contest will be announced at the opening session, 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2. Participants can sign up for a one-on-one manuscript critique, browse the on-site bookstore, and attend lunch time events including a poetry reading and exhibit by poet/artist Priscilla Maynard.

From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. conference attendees and presenters will gather for a public reception hosted by the Edmonds Arts Commission and sponsored by Windermere Real Estate in the Edmonds Plaza Room. The Edmonds Book Shop will have books by conference presenters available and many of the authors will be present for signing.

Following the reception, an open mike and reading event will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Edmonds Plaza Room where writers are invited to present published or in progress works, or simply come and listen to fellow conference attendees and, time permitting, other writers from the community.
