Edmonds-Woodway senior Yonatan Yilma took first place at the Edmonds District boys cross country championships but Mountlake Terrace’s depth lifted the Hawks to the team title Oct. 11 at Lynndale Park in Lynnwood.
Yilma finished the 2.75-mile course in 14 minutes, 45 seconds, a second faster than his time a year ago. Mountlake Terrace had five runners place in the top seven spots to edge Edmonds-Woodway 23-32. Meadowdale (91) was third and was followed by Lynnwood (101).
The Hawks were led by Michael Tran (15:12) and Tyler Hill (15:25), who were second and third, respectively. Teammates Matt Beeninga, Robert Yarbrough and Ben Walter finished fifth, sixth and seventh.
Lynnwood’s Mawa Ali finished first in the girls race in 18:59. She was followed by Mountlake Terrace’s Cari Smith (19:12) and Meadowdale’s Caroline Kratz (19:25).
Edmonds-Woodway had four runners in the top 10 and won the girls title, outdistancing Mountlake Terrace 41-58. Meadowdale (61) was third and Lynnwood (64) finished fourth.
