A Community Transit promotion to educate people about new bus-riding options worked out especially well for one Mill Creek family.
Not only did the entire family get a free bus ride to Alderwood Mall, but Harmony Nash, a third-grader at Mill Creek Elementary School, won the raffle for a family dinner at Azteca Restaurant.
Community Transit’s superhero mascot, Oxy Gene, delivered the raffle prize, donated by the Mill Creek Azteca, on Dec. 19.
Janet Nash said her daughter was familiar with bus riding after a Community Transit education program offered by Oxy Gene’s alter ego, Steve Peters.
Janet Nash said her 2-year-old son talks about taking the bus every time he sees one go by on Village Green Drive.
“So when those little coupons came in the mail, it gave us the perfect incentive to try the bus,” she said. Community Transit mailed out free ride coupons and bus information to about 9,000 households in the Mill Creek and Silver Firs areas in October to kick-off two new bus routes in those communities.
The entire Nash family decided to take the bus to the Alderwood Mall. As they looked into the bus system, the Nash’s learned that their 18-year-old son can use it as well. “We found out that Route 116 will take him straight to Edmonds Community College right from the bottom of our hill,” Janet Nash said.
“We’ve been here seven years and just never really looked into the buses. But we were really pleased with the new service and just happy to be more aware of things,” Nash said.
About 1,000 Community Transit free ride tickets were redeemed during the special promotion.
Nine Community Transit bus routes now operate in the Mill Creek area, with service to Lynnwood, downtown Seattle, the University of Washington, Bothell, Everett and other destinations.
