Samantha Young led a top-five sweep by Shoreline District divers at the second of four District 1 state-qualifying meets Oct. 9 at Fidalgo Pool in Anacortes.

The Shorecrest junior and defending Class 3A state champion took first out of 19 competitors with an 11-dive total of 444.75 points that broke a nine-year-old pool record.

Shorewood senior Kelsey Wright finished second with 288.10 points. Shorecrest junior Deanna Wilson improved her score from the previous district meet by more than 20 points to finish third with 268.

Shorecrest senior Kristina Bendiksen took fourth with 265.15 and Shorewood sophomore Elle MacGeorge was fifth with 247.80.

Also for Shorewood, Liz Gasperini was eighth, Samantha Brotherton was ninth and Kerry Trainor was 14th. Heather Pence was 10th and Laura Hill was 13th for Shorecrest.

Young was the only participant to reach the state-qualifying standard. District 1 divers have two more opportunities to qualify for state, Oct. 16 in Marysville and Oct. 23 in Bellingham.
