Local food: Grow it, eat it!

Posted at 10:40 am by Sarah Jackson

It may seem strange to be thinking about gardening — much less growing your own food — as winter fast approaches, but that’s exactly what’s happening at an upcoming gathering for the Snohomish County-based Foundation for Sustainable Community.

Marisha Auerbach will present “How to Grow Your Own Produce in 2½ Years: Cultivating Local Food Security and Building Community Gardens” at 7 p.m. Jan. 7 at Wired and Unplugged, an Internet coffee house in Snohomish.

Auerbach will explain why the Maritime Northwest is the land of plenty for people who want to raise their own food using “perennial forage systems,” which function much like natural ecological systems and yield year-round produce with, believe it or not, minimal work.

You’ll see a photo slideshow of Auerbach’s garden and learn her philosophy of edible gardening.

Admission is $7 to $10, but no one will be turned away for a lack of funds. Bring seeds for a seed exchange and arrive as early as 6 p.m. to meet local farmers and food producers. Visit the Foundation for Sustainable Community calendar or call Marilene at 360-863-1820 with questions.
