Island living: Author O. Alan Weltzien, a professor of English at Montana University-Western, will talk about his books, “A Father and an Island: Reflections on Loss” ($18) and “The Norman Maclean Reader” ($27.50) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Everett Public Library.
“A Father and an Island” is a bittersweet memoir of childhood summers in the San Juans. Both books will be available for purchase and signing.

Paddle power: Take a wild ride on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon with author Elisabeth Hyde. She will talk about and sign her novel, “In the Heart of the Canyon,” at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Third Place Books.
“Canyon” ($25.95) follows a group of neophytes as they meet the challenges of a rafting trip and face the challenges in their own lives.
