COMMUNITY ROUNDUP: Everett rowers make strong showing in San Diego

The Everett Rowing Association sent a men's varsity eight and a men's junior-varsity eight to the San Diego Crew Classic over the weekend and it was a successful trip, with the varsity finishing second in Sunday's final and the JV eight placing first.

In a six-boat final heat, Everett's JV crew won in a time of 6 minutes, 34.32 seconds over the 2,000-meter course. Second place went to the Marin Rowing Association of Greenbrae, Calif., in 6:36.71.

Members of the Everett JV eight were coxswain Joe Stavig (Everett High School), Mac Baker (Kamiak), Austin Overland (Running Start), Rex Ryman (Archbishop Murphy), Travis Pachosa (Stanwood), Jake Clark (Everett), David Hammond (Kamiak), Nick Mitchell (Everett) and Nikita Cardenas (Everett).

Everett's varsity eight placed second to the Marin Rowing Association in the final. Marin, the only crew out of 76 boats to beat Everett at the Head of the Charles Regatta last October in Boston, was timed in 6:13.30. Everett posted a time of 6:18.57.

Everett's varsity eight included coxswain Charles Forrest (Everett Community College), Austin Bentley (Kamiak), Sam Helms (Snohomish), Phil Walczak (Archbishop Murphy), Alex Engel (Snohomish), Beau Skalley (Archbishop Murphy), Alex Walczak (Archbishop Murphy), Martin Forde (Archbishop Murphy) and Cole Borseth (Archbishop Murphy).

Volleyball

The Snohomish Valley Volleyball Club's Fusion U-14 team placed first in the Division I Silver Bracket at the Domino's Pizza Invitational held March 26 in Tacoma.

After completing pool play at 1-2, Fusion defeated Tacoma Narrows 25-8, 25-10 to advance to the championship match, where it defeated Evergreen Juniors VBC 25-23, 25-16.

The Fusion team, made up of players from several area schools, is ranked 17th in the 69-team Puget Sound Power League.

Members of the squad included Kristen Kostenick, Natasha Valentine, Mikel Pounds, Courtney Schmidt, Madi Solis, Megan Gregarek, Abbie Miller, Katie James, Kahlia Kellihar, Kayla Heman, Sarah Gregarek and Natalie Garrick.

The team was coached by Anela Kaikala, Cindy Kostenick and Elise Valentine.

Lacrosse

Meaghan Hess of Lake Stevens was named the girls Washington High School Division I Player of the Week for March 21-27 by US Lacrosse.

Hess, a senior who competes for the Snohomish Lacrosse Club, scored 13 points (11 goals, two assists) in two games, a win over Seattle Prep and a tie with Issaquah.

Hess, an all-state pick as a sophomore and junior, has signed a national letter of intent to play lacrosse next season at Monmouth University in New Jersey.

Gymnastics

Everett-based Leading Edge Gymnastics won a team championship and three all-around titles at the 2011 Washington State Championships held March 25-27 in Poulsbo.

Leading Edge's Level 8 team finished first with a score of 113.850. Lauren Wright of Snohomish led the team by winning the all-around title in the Senior A Division. Wright placed first in the vault and on the bars and finished with an overall score of 37.975.

The other all-around winners were Miranda McGinnis of Arlington in the Level 7 Senior A Division (37.525), and Jeia Villacis of Everett, who placed first in the Level 9 Senior A Division with a score of 37.400.

Basketball

Western Washington University guard Amanda Dunbar has been named a second-team Division II Bulletin All-American.

Dunbar, a senior from Marysville, averaged 13.1 points and 4.0 assists in helping the Vikings' women's basketball team to a 26-4 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II West Regional.

Dunbar finished her career as the Great Northwest Athletic Association's all-time leader in 3-point field goals with 256. She also ranks fourth on Western's all-time scoring list with 1,654 points.
