Draft projections not a factor for UW's Polk

SEATTLE _ University of Washington junior running back Chris Polk said Friday that he'll wait until after the upcoming Alamo Bowl to decide whether to declare early for the NFL draft.

What he won't be doing between now and the time he makes a decision is perusing the mock drafts.

Polk said Friday that his decision won't come down to where he might get drafted _ not even if he's a projected first-round pick versus if he's a potential fifth-rounder.

"I'm not really into the rounds," he said. "I just want to see if I can take my talents to the next level. Hopefully, I can. It's going to be a big decision to make after the bowl game

Polk added that the main factor in his decision is how ready he feels, as not just a runner but also a pass blocker and receiver. How NFL scouts rank him in those areas, and where they project him, are not necessarily concerns of his.

"It doesn't matter to me," he said of the draft rankings. "Who's the person telling me? You never know what these coaches are thinking, or GM's are thinking. Rounds, that's just a prediction. It's not true-or-false. So it's important not to just go off that."

Polk, who would almost certainly become the school's all-time leading rusher if he stayed for his senior season, is ranked as the No. 4 halfback, and 58th overall player, in the CBS Sports draft rankings. Those rankings have him ahead of Oregon's LaMichael James and Wisconsin star Montee Ball, among others.

He has already walked for graduation and is about to earn his degree in American Ethnic Studies.

"I've got to really do what's best for me," he said. "I've got to look at both sides, at the pros and cons of leaving. It's going to be a real tough decision to make."
