Alderwood Mall to open parking garage

LYNNWOOD — Just as the holiday shopping season gears up, Alderwood Mall is making nearly 1,000 new parking spaces available within the next week.

The first two levels of a new parking garage on the mall’s south side open Saturday, said Tamera Wachter, spokeswoman for the mall. By the end of next week, the third level should be open as well.

The parking will be more convenient for customers, she said.

The opening of the new garage, located near JC Penney, follows September’s inauguration of a new parking garage on the north side of the mall.

In early December, a new entrance to the mall will open on the building’s southeast corner, close to Sears.

Meanwhile, work continues on the two large additions to Alderwood, The Terraces and The Village. Next to the new Nordstrom store, workers this week are demolishing the old Nordstrom in order to make way for The Village.

Wachter said the real kickoff to the busiest shopping period of the year comes at 10 a.m. Saturday when the mall’s Santa Claus will be welcomed. She said the mall’s management is anticipating a positive end to the year.

"We are very optimistic about this retail season. With the enhancements we’ve made to the property, we feel confident about the traffic we’ll see," Wachter said.

If construction stays on track, this will be the last holiday season before the mall’s ambitious expansion is finished. The new shopping areas are scheduled to be ready for shoppers a year from now.
