(There were) events like pie-eating contests, break-dancing, a Hacky Sack tournament and students bringing their musical instruments to school to play together. They don’t happen that often but when they do we try to make it real fun.” – Priscilla Walker, 11th grade

Edmonds Elementary School kicked off its February Read-a-thon with Principal David Meglathery shouting: “It’s time to read. Go for the gold!”

Edmonds Elementary School librarian Paul Borchert said the goal is to have every student read during the month.

At 7 p.m. Thursday, Edmonds Public Library hosts puppeteer Tina Bixby, and at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 it will feature good-night stories in a pajama-party setting.

The Snohomish High School Panther Parent Club is offering an eight-hour class – two half-day sessions – to help students prepare for the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Cost is $50. Pre-payment and registration is required. No refunds will be issued after the registration date unless the class is canceled because of low enrollment.

Snohomish teacher Justin Fox-Bailey will teach the class. For more information, call 360-568-7980.

The cafeteria kitchens in Snohomish School District are smokin’.

Food services workers last month took part in a local Culinary Celebration competition and took the top prize. The group presented a chili lime cilantro pork roast, new potatoes with bacon and cheese, and a Southwest chipotle Caesar salad.

On the team were Christie Woods of Machias Elementary School; Frances Chaffee of Cascade View Elementary School; Gloria Moreno of the Freshmen Campus; Sharon Clark of Snohomish High School; and Kindle Young of Emerson Elementary School.
