Mariners Update

A daily look at the Mariners in spring training:

  • Mariners vs. Arizona Diamondbacks, 12:05 p.m. (PST)

  • Radio: KOMO (1000 AM)

  • TV: KSTW (channel 11)

  • Pitchers: Right-hander Freddy Garcia will pitch the first six innings for the Mariners, followed by Rafael Soriano and Kevin Jarvis.

  • The line drive that could have knocked Joel Pineiro out of the Mariners’ pitching rotation last week officially became nothing more than a flesh wound Saturday.

    Pineiro pitched six innings and allowed three hits in the Mariners’ 4-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, five days after a line drive left his pitching elbow swollen and bruised.

    The only hard-hit balls he allowed cleared the fence for Brewers home runs, but Pineiro otherwise pitched well and without residue from early in the week.

    “Everything was great,” Pineiro said. “No pain. Nothing.”

    Pineiro struck out six and reached his pitch count of 85 pitches. He will get one more exhibition start, against the San Diego Padres on Thursday in the final game in Arizona, and is scheduled to throw 100-105 pitches.

    Pineiro will start the second game of the regular season April 7 at Safeco Field against the Anaheim Angels.

  • Third baseman Scott Spiezio suffered back spasms and was pulled from Saturday’s game. Mariners manager Bob Melvin said Spiezio should be fine, but that he wouldn’t play today against the Diamondbacks.

  • “Your heart’s into it, but your butt’s not.”

    Jamie Moyer to strength coach Allen Wirtala, who cautiously tried to bunt off a pitching machine as Moyer adjusted its aim.

  • Designated hitter Edgar Martinez spent Saturday in Seattle as he and his wife, Holli, took part in a fundraiser for Overlake Hospital. Martinez flew to Seattle on Friday night and will return to Peoria this morning in time to play today’s game against the Diamondbacks.
