CNBC cancels newscast for more entertainment

CNBC is canceling its nightly newscast hosted by John Siegenthaler, the latest move in the network’s overhaul of its evening lineup to feature more entertainment.

The program’s last day will be Friday. It will be replaced by a Monday rerun of “Meet the Press” and “Cover to Cover.”

The news staff will be reassigned within NBC News, while Siegenthaler, long a rising star at NBC News, will become a special correspondent on “NBC Nightly News.”

NBC inks Brokaw: NBC announced Wednesday that Tom Brokaw, 64, has signed a contract that will keep him at the network through 2014. Brokaw, who’s stepping down Dec. 1 as anchorman of NBC’s “Nightly News,” will anchor and produce documentaries for NBC and its cable channels, including MSNBC and CNBC. He will also serve as an analyst on major breaking news events.

Actor files for divorce: Kiefer Sutherland, 37, has filed for divorce from Elizabeth Kelly Winn Sutherland, his wife of nearly eight years, citing irreconcilable differences. The two have been separated since 1999.

Sale sets Pollock: record: A Jackson Pollock painting, “No. 12, 1949,” sold for $11.6 million Tuesday, setting a record for the artist and topping a blockbuster auction of postwar and contemporary art at Christie’s. Other top-selling works included Mark Rothko’s “No. 15,” which sold for $8.9 million, and a 1967 self-portrait by Andy Warhol that brought in $6.9 million.

New job for Beatles kin: Oasis is taking its fascination with The Beatles one step further – by enlisting Zak Starkey, son of former Beatle Ringo Starr, to play drums. Band member Noel Gallagher said on British Broadcasting Corp. radio Tuesday that Starkey had been working with Oasis in the studio and would join them on tour next month.

Country singer OK: Charley Pride is expected to make a full recovery following brain surgery Saturday in Dallas, his personal manager said Monday. Pride, 66, was hospitalized Wednesday for a subdural hematoma, a blood clot that occurs when blood from a torn vessel collects between the brain and the skull.

Actor in trouble: Tom Sizemore has violated the terms of probation imposed for abusing ex-girlfriend and former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, a prosecutor said Monday in Los Angeles. Prosecutors allege that Sizemore “tested dirty” for drugs in early March, the actor’s lawyer said.

Singer sprains neck: Celine Dion canceled performances of her show through Friday at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas after a doctor told her she needed to rest. Dion, 36, has been hampered by a sprained neck for the past week.
