Edgar Winter headlines music acts

Published 9:00 pm Thursday, August 12, 2004

Next month Edgar Winter will perform with B.B. King at the Hollywood Bowl. But Saturday night he’s taking over the main stage at the Taste of Edmonds.

He’ll be one of 19 acts at that location, with more than two dozen other acts performing on two other stages at the three-day festival.

Winter met success in the 1970s with the Edgar Winter Group (“Frankenstein,” “Free Ride”). He created more than 20 albums, invented the keyboard body strap and may have been the first to feature a synthesizer as the main instrument in a song.

And he’s found a home for his music in television and radio advertisements as well as film and TV projects (“Netherworld,” “My Cousin Vinny,” “Wayne’s World 2,” “Wag the Dog,” “The Simpsons”).

The three stages offer more than blues-rock, however. Bluegrass, pop, jazz, country, folk, swing, steel drums, R&B, Scandinavian, new-age, Celtic, rock, top 40, a cappella and a bit of Bavarian oompah will drift through the festival grounds.

If you’re having to narrow your choices, consider The Coats, Tillers Folly, Late Tuesday, The Beatniks, Deems Tsutakawa, Scott Lindenmuth and Scott Cossu.

On the down side, there are precious few female acts and very few women in the bands in this line-up (perhaps it’s just the luck of scheduling).
