Granstrom strikes gold in Utah

Colby Granstrom of Lake Stevens won the boys overall title at the Western Junior Olympics held March 18-20 in Snowbird, Utah.

The event drew 100 of the top 13- and 14-year-old boy skiers in the western United States.

Granstrom won the gold medal in the slalom and finished sixth in the Super-G for an overall score of 19.96. Anton Hilts of Mount Bachelor, Ore., was second at 29.84 .

Granstrom, 14, dominated the slalom, winning the first run in 39.01 seconds and capturing the second in 43.83 for a combined time of 1:22.84. He finished 1.52 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Nicolas Tomczyk of Park City, Utah.

The victory qualified Granstrom for an international competition scheduled for this weekend in Whistler, British Columbia.

In the Super G, Granstrom finished sixth in a time of 49.32.

Gymnastics

Gymnast wins state title: Nick Moser of Everett, competing in the Level 4 competition, won the pommel horse (a score of 9.30), the rings (9.40), the parallel bars (9.0) and the high bar (9.10) to capture the all-around title in his age group at the State Gymnastics Meet held March 19-20 in Bellevue.

Moser, 14, finished with an all-around score of 54.90. He competes for Leading Edge Gymnastics of Everett.

Six members of the Leading Edge team qualified for the regionals scheduled for April 8-10 in Portland, Ore. The group includes Jonathon Chapman, Peter Moser, Steven Marquardt, Trevor Marquardt, Charles Forrest and Tucker Rabel.

Mardi Gras Madness Invitational: The Mountlake Terrace-based Cascade Elite gymnastics squad won the Level 7 and Level 8 team titles at the Mardi Gras Madness Invitational on March 18 in Bellingham.

The Level 7 team was led by all-around winners Summer Brooks (36.975) and Jasmine Kwan (37.075). The Level 8 team was paced by all-around winners Jenna Donahue (36.925) and Kayla Pumphrey (36.225).

In Level 10, Cascade Elite’s Tova Loutsis won the all-around in her age group with a score of 35.125.

Martial Arts

Malloy wins gold: Marti Malloy of Oak Harbor won a gold medal at the 2005 Juvenile and Junior Pan American Judo Championships held March 10-14 in Valencia, Venezuela.

Malloy placed first in the junior women’s 57-kilogram division. En route to the finals, Malloy defeated Deiglimar Aguillon of Venezuela and Ana Campos of Argentina. In the finals, Malloy bested Ketleyn Lima of Brazil.
