Snohomish girls win Eason Invite title
Published 9:00 pm Saturday, April 30, 2005
SNOHOMISH Early Saturday morning, when most people were still watching cartoons or enjoying a few more hours of sleep, anxiety gripped Ellie Bonner.
The freshman distance runner was stressed. Two days after performing below her expectations at a regular-season meet in Marysville, Bonner geared up to compete in her first Eason Invitational, an event hosted annually by her Snohomish Panthers.
The pressure was palpable: home turf, home crowd, a freshman’s inexperience.
It turns out Bonner had nothing to worry about.
Thanks in part to Bonner’s second-place finish in the 3,200-meter run, the Snohomish girls won the 2005 Eason Invitational Track and Field Meet at Snohomish High’s Veterans Memorial Stadium. About 1,000 athletes from a total of 74 boys and girls teams competed in the event.
Bonner, Jessica Yates (first place in long jump and triple jump) and Kara Sporrong led the way for Snohomish, which won its invitational for the fifth time but the first since 2002, according to meet director Tuck Gionet. The Panthers tied for second last year.
“I was really nervous,” Bonner said of her shaky emotional state before the meet. “I just wanted to do better today.”
Better than Thursday, that is, when Snohomish finished 28 points behind Maryville-Pilchuck in a Western Conference North Division meet. The Panthers picked up their intensity Saturday, scoring 76 points to hold off Olympia (74 points) for the team title. Ferndale (46) was a distant third.
Cascade junior Whitney Hooks was named girls field athlete of the meet for the second straight year. She won two events (discus and shot put) and took fourth in the hammer throw. Hurdler Elizabeth Mattila of Ferndale was named girls track athlete of the meet for winning the 100 and 300 hurdles races.
On the boys side, Everett displayed impressive balance to claim its second consecutive Eason team crown. Senior Clay Kincaid was named men’s track athlete of the meet for the Seagulls, who racked up 93 points to easily defeat second-place Capital (76). Kincaid won the 110 hurdles in 15.19 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 39.87, both personal-best marks. He also ran a leg on Everett’s first-place 1,600 relay team, which, quite fittingly, prevailed in the meet’s final event.
Axel Stanovsky (second in 3,200), Seth Codell (third, pole vault), Isaac Hicks (second in shot put, fourth in discus) and Spencer Warfield (fifth in discus, sixth in shot put) also came up big for Everett, the defending Wesco South and District 1 champion.
Everett coach Doug Hall said he was pleased to see his team win another Eason title, especially since some of his top athletes (Rick Gervasi, javelin; sprinter Justin Hudson) are recovering from injury.
“We definitely came in looking to repeat,” Hall said, “because last year winning this meet put our program at the next level. And it propelled us the league and district championship and a good showing at state.”
“It was a team effort,” Hall continued, “but the highlight was obviously Clay Kincaid. He was great.”
Hall called Capital thrower Zach Midles “amazing.” Midles scored 30 of his team’s points by winning the hammer throw (219-2.5), shot put (55-2.5) and discus (168-3.5). For his effort, Midles was named the men’s field athlete of the meet.
Another notable individual performance came from Princess Joy Griffey of Decatur. The defending Class 4A state champion in the 100, Griffey broke the four-year old Eason meet record in the 100 preliminaries (11.92, down from Janae Young’s 11.94 in 2001). She later won the 100 final in a slightly slower time of 12.01.
