Movie reviews
“Brick” HHH A daffy and often marvelous experiment that goes on too long. This is a Dashiell Hammett-like story set in a high school, played absolutely straight and loaded with curveball dialogue. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is ideal as the gloomy hero. (R, for violence, subject matter.)
“The Devil and Daniel Johnston” HHH A compulsively watchable documentary about a talented singer-songwriter struggling with mental illness. A glut of home movies makes this a rounded picture of Daniel Johnston’s demons. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)
“Ice Age: The Meltdown” HHH Sequel to the 2002 computer-animated hit, with the regular returning-notably the scene-stealing Scrat. The story isn’t as strong this time, but the jokes are frequent and the characters likable. (PG, for subject matter.)
“Inside Man” HHH A bank heist evolves into a complicated guessing game, with a much bigger canvas at play. Spike Lee’s film is essentially absurd, but mostly entertaining, with Clive Owen the bank robber and Denzel Washington and Jodie Foster engaging in some skillful sparring matches. (R, for language, violence.)
“Lonesome Jim” HH Steve Buscemi directs this modest, well-observed study of a depressed slacker (Casey Affleck) returning to his Indiana home town. Liv Tyler plays the fantasy figure who rescues him. (Not rated; probably R, for language, subject matter.)
“Lucky Number Slevin” HHH A sap (Josh Hartnett) accidentally gets caught in a gangland stand-off between two titans-chewily played by Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley. Bruce Willis is also in the mix of this satisfyingly twisty comic thriller. (R, for violence, language.)
“Match Point” HHHH A serious one from Woody Allen (who doesn’t appear), about a young tennis pro (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) in London who finds himself groomed to join an upper-class family…except for one little uncontrollable urge toward a sexy actress (Scarlet Johansson). The sinister tone is surprisingly well maintained. (R, for language, subject matter.)
“Scary Movie 4” HH It’s rude and scatological, but this installment in the parody series is the funniest of the bunch. Most of it follows a “War of the Worlds” send-up, but there’s room for “Brokeback Mountain” and Oprah, too. (PG-13, for subject matter, language, violence.)
“The Sentinel” HH A bread-and-butter role for Michael Douglas as a Secret Service agent suspected of treason-who also happens to be romancing the first lady (Kim Basinger). The script wobbles, but the professionalism of Douglas and Kiefer Sutherland helps make this one enjoyable. (PG-13, for violence.)
“Shakespeare Behind Bars” HHH Fascinating documentary about a program in a Kentucky prison that lets inmates put on a production of Shakespeare each year. In learning about “The Tempest”-which comes alive in an urgent way-we also learn about the inmates in the cast. (Not rated; probably R, for language, subject matter.)
“Slither” HH A horror comedy about an alien invasion in a small town, where are sheriff (Nathan Fillion, from “Firefly”) combats hundreds of outer-space slugs. The jokes don’t sit especially well next to the grotesque make-up effects. (R, for violence, language.)
“The Squid and the Whale” HHHH A family falls apart in Brooklyn in 1986, an event seen through the eyes of the two sons, age 16 and 12. The observations are dead-on and the acting is terrific in this funny indie film. Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney lead the cast. (R, for language, subject matter.)
“Stoned” H A depiction of the events leading to the death of Brian Jones (Leo Gregory), whose life as a Rolling Stone is also flashed back to. Jones was an interesting, conflicted guy, but this movie is literal-minded and silly. (R, for nudity, language, subject matter.)
“Syriana” HH An ambitious take on the connections between the global oil industry and governments around the world-told through a complicated (and confusing) group of settings. George Clooney and Matt Damon are among the many characters in Stephen Gaghan’s film. (R, for violence and language.)
“Take My Eyes” HHH Straightforward Spanish film about marital abuse, set in the superbly photographed city of Toledo. Luis Tosar, as the intense husband, threatens to overwhelm Laia Marull’s wife, but both actors dig deep to produce complex characters. (In Spanish, with English subtitles.) (Not rated; probably R, for nudity, violence.)
“Thank You for Smoking” HHH Political incorrectness about a spin-doctoring tobacco lobbyist (Aaron Eckhart) and his upside-down logic world. The movie is funny, and has something to say about the political arena now, yet its prankster approach falls short of the best satire, which needs fury. With William H. Macy, Katie Holmes. (R, for language, subject matter.)
“The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada” HHHH A wonderful and complex Western directed by and starring Tommy Lee Jones. Both traditional and modern, the film tells of cowboy Jones taking the corpse of a friend down to Mexico. (R, for violence, language, subject matter.)
“Tibet: A Buddhist Trilogy” HHH The rituals of Tibetan monks in exile in India, closely and beautifully filmed in 1977 and re-edited for release. Not a step-by-step intro to Buddhism, but an immersive experience, which will be mesmerizing or taxing, depending on the viewer’s level of interest in the subject. (In Tibetan, with English subtitles.) (Not rated; probably PG, for subject matter.)
“Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story” HHH Michael Winterbottom’s adaptation of Laurence Sterne’s 18th-century novel, but framed by a film being made of the novel-so we watch period scenes interspersed with the actors and filmmakers on the set. Slight but enjoyable, with Steve Coogan etching a funny portrait of a vain, paranoid leading man-himself. (R, for language, subject matter.)
“Who Gets to Call it Art?” HHH A breezy, rapid look at the New York art world of the 1950s-60s, specifically revolving around curator Henry Geldzahler, who championed all manner of modern artists. Good archival footage and a great soundtrack make this fun. (Not rated; probably PG-13, for subject matter.)
“The Wild” HHH Enjoyable kids’ movie with a premise that duplicates the story of “Madagascar”: animals from a New York City zoo make their way to Africa. A swift, cheeky comedy with a masterpiece of voice acting by Eddie Izzard as a koala bear. (G)
“The World’s Fastest Indian” HH A true story of New Zealand’s Burt Munro (Anthony Hopkins), who souped up an old Indian motorcycle and went off to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah to try for a speed record. Not much sticks to the ribs here, but the film exudes affection and the Bonneville location shooting is cool. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)
