We have the power of numbers, let’s use it

In The Herald’s July 24 editorial, the concept of Volunteer Computing was quite amazing to learn about. What a very easy way for each of us to make a difference!

While the malaria control project no longer needs additional volunteers at this time, I learned about yet additional projects at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php – there’s a project for different interests to support.

One that particularly pulled at my heart strings was the University of Washington’s Rosetta@home which is focuses on designing new proteins to fight illnesses such as HIV, Malaria, Cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Then to hear about the collaboration being fostered via the Gates Foundation grants for an AIDS vaccine was again a welcomed editorial. We all want an end to AIDS.

While I wholeheartedly support the need for an AIDS vaccine to prevent further transmission of HIV, let’s also keep in mind the 8,000 children, women, and men who die daily worldwide of AIDS related conditions. Those of us fortunate to live in wealthy nations have the blessings AIDS medications, health care access, and simply an easier life, and thus can continue to lead productive lives for our families and communities. Yet, those living with AIDS in impoverished nations do not have those blessings.

Yet, we can make a difference for people suffering of AIDS, Malaria, and Tuberculosis everywhere. We can write our Senators and Representative to urge the maximum dollars possible go to the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. We have power in numbers.
