COEUR d’ALENE, ID. – After a long trip across the state to Idaho, the Lake Stevens boys wrestling team shook off the fatigue of a long ride to place third overall in the 35th edition of the Tri-State Tournament.
The prestigious Tri-State Tournament, held at North Idaho College, is seen by many as the same level of competition as a state tournament.
Lake Stevens star wrestler Kelly Kubec won the individual title at 130 pounds, to lead the Vikings, who finished behind tournament champion Sedro-Woolley and Hermiston, Ore.
“The competition was pretty stiff,” Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said.
The Vikings had four other placers including Josh Monson who took second in the 135-pound weight class. Mitch Kipton (140) and Zach Zweisel (103) each took third in their respective weight classes, and Blake Austin finished fifth in the heavyweight (285 pounds) class.
“All of our placers did a really nice job,” Barnes said.
Barnes was incredibly impressed with the talent that the Vikings faced.
“(There was) very high-quality competition,” Barnes said. “This was one of the better Tri-State Tournaments I’ve attended in 25 years of coaching.”
Cardinal Classic At Tacoma, thanks to a second place finish in the 103-pound division by Jared Mead, Jackson was able to place seventh overall in the Cardinal Classic held at Franklin Pierce High School.
The Timberwolves (105 points overall) had two third-place finishers (Kelly Capalo at 285 pounds and Tyler Raphvun at 215), three fourth-place finishers (Myles Bittinger at 171, Kyle Meakins at 152, and Mason Mazza at 145), and two fifth-place finishers (Tara Miller at 112 and Andrew Lucero at 160).
Peninsula High School took first place with a score of 194 points, followed by Emeralds Ridge (125.5 points) and host Franklin Pierce (118).

The Turks had four wrestlers place. Mike Harnell (125 pounds), Abe Bray (152), Jeff Hales (160), and Jake Estrella (189) each finished third in their respective weight classes for Sultan.
The team from Omak took the team title, followed by Quincy who placed second, and Chelan who took third.
