Jack Pearce qualified for the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships by finishing third out of 55 runners in the midget (11/12-year-old) boys race in the Region 13 Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships Nov. 17 at Sandy High School in Oregon.
The 12-year-old from Brier started well and moved into third place about 800 meters into the race. From there, Pearce cruised home over the 3,000-meter (1.86-mile) course that was slick with mud and standing water in many places from rain that had doused the area for several days. He finished in 11 minutes, 12 seconds. David Goldstone of the Federal Way Track Club won in 10:43. Isaac Fall from the Spokane Mercury was second in 11:01.
Pearce, who runs for the Rain City Flyers, plans to participate in the national championship meet Dec. 8 on the historic Rim Rock Cross Country Course in Lawrence, Kan. The top 20 finishers in each age group at 15 regional meets around the county qualify. Region 13 includes Washington, Oregon, Alaska and northern Idaho.
