Swing Dance supports SC trip to Ireland

Locals can help Shorecrest High School’s Choir and Marching Band get to Ireland this spring by attending the Dublin Dollars Swing Dance 7:30-10 p.m. Jan. 26 in the Shorecrest cafeteria. The school’s stage and jazz bands will play tunes for dancing.

Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults.

A $5 swing dance lesson will be offered by the school’s Swing Dance Club at 6:45 p.m. Refreshments may be purchased at the event.

Kinderfest is coming Jan. 25

The Shoreline School District Kinderfest event provides an opportunity for parents who will be enrolling their children in kindergarten for the 2008-09 school year to get information about kindergarten programs and services.

Kinderfest will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 26 in the Shoreline Room at the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Avenue NE.

Topics to be covered include kindergarten curriculum, registration, transportation, health and safety, before/after school care, immunization requirements, student services and all-day or half day programs.

Kindergarten registration for the 2008-09 school year begins Jan. 28.

Brighton School open house

Brighton School will have an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 26 at the school, 6717 212th St. SW in Lynnwood. Brighton is a private school which serves preschool through eighth-grade.

Qwest offers technology grants

Applications will be accepted for Qwest Foundation learning technologies grants until Feb. 4. The foundation is funding a $100,000 technology integration grant program for Washington teachers.

Applicants must generate a detailed classroom project proposal that includes assessments to measure student learning.

The grant program is designed to develop standards-based learning models that use a variety of digital technologies. It also aims to identify instructional practices based on research and current practice that take advantage of today’s digital technologies.

Teachers or teacher teams can send their application until 3 p.m. Feb. 4 to apply for grants of up to $10,000. The application is at http://www.k12.wa.us/EdTech/.

Shorewood student nominated

Emma McAdams, a Shorewood High School senior, has been nominated to compete in the national Principal’s Leadership Award scholarship program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

McAdams was nominated by Shorewood Principal Bill Dunbar. One hundred national winners will be chosen this spring to receive a college scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $12,000.

McAdams is a member of Shorewood’s drill team and the Annual year book staff. She volunteers at Hopelink, at a nursing home and at Seattle Children’s Theater.

She also is a leader in Creating a World of Difference, a club devoted to reducing prejudice and discrimination.

Nominate Support Person of the Year

Nominations for 2007-08 Shoreline Support Person of the Year will be accepted until Jan. 25. Nominations may be made by staff, students, parents, and other community members. Nomination forms are on the district Web site at www.shorelineschools.org/news/forms or by calling 206-361-4412.

Nominations packets for Support Person of the Year nominees should be returned to the Public Information Office at Shoreline Center. The winner will be recognized during Support Staff Appreciation Week, March 10-14.

T-Bird Crew offers story time

Local children and families are invited to join students from the T-bird Crew, a program for severely disabled Shorewood High School students, for story time at Hotwire Coffee in North City from 10:20-10:50 a.m. Wednesdays during the school year.

This is an opportunity to listen to stories, learn about people with disabilities and enjoy coffee.
