SHORELINE — The Shorewood boys basketball team will have to forfeit its two wins because of the use of an ineligible player.
The player did not attend school last spring semester and that violated the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s rule that requires an athlete to attend school the semester prior to the semester he plays.
The Shoreline School District self-reported the violation Friday to the Western Conference, which imposed the penalties on Shorewood in accordance with WIAA rules.
“This violation is strictly an administrative error, and one that slipped through our checks and balances. The athlete correctly checked the appropriate boxes stating he had not attended school the previous semester, and we simply made an error in noting the previous semester violation,” Shoreline School District athletic director Don Dalziel wrote in a statement.
Dalziel declined to identify the player, but in an interview with the Shoreline Enterprise Jan. 11, Shorewood forward Stuart Harvey said he dropped out of school in the fall of 2006.
Dalziel also wrote, “This athlete will not participate in games at any level, until the start of second semester, providing he meets the academic requirements of the WIAA and the Shoreline School District.”
The first semester at Shorewood’s ends Feb. 1, which means the player would be eligible to play that night against Edmonds-Woodway if he meets the district’s academic requirements.
