‘Tell me WY’ we should ‘Say WA’

Published 11:12 am Monday, March 3, 2008

Washington’s new tourism slogan “Say WA” is based on the state’s postal abbreviation.

So, maybe other states should follow our lead. Here are a few suggestions:

Alabama: Big AL

Alaska; At-AK

Arizona: Pizz-AZ

California: CAress

Colorado: COkaCola

Connecticut: C-T scan

Delaware: DElightful

Dist. of Columbia: AC-DC

Georgia: Go Ga-GA

Hawaii: HI there

Idaho: I-D required

Illinois: Feel IL

Indiana: Come IN

Kansas KS me

Kentucky: Off KY

Louisiana: Ooh-La-LA

Maine: Help ME

Massachusetts: Hi MA

Minnesota: M-N-m

Montana: M-T space

Missouri: MOmentum

Nebraska: TrickNE

Nevada: N-V us

New Mexico: m-N-M

New York: DrawNY

Ohio: OH my

Oregon: Either OR

Pennsylvania: DearPA

Rhode Island: Ham on RI

South Dakota: L-SD

Wyoming: Tell me WY

King County should follow Sno-Isle

If you use the libraries in Brier, Edmonds, Lynwood, Mill Creek or Mountlake Terrace, you have an advantage over users of the libraries in Lake Forest Park, Shoreline and Richmond Beech.

That’s because your library is part of a system that pays attention to the interests of local communities.

The Sno-Isle Library System, which runs 19 libraries in Snohomish and Island counties, will listen to patrons at a series of community meetings in May.

The King County Library System, on the other hand, seems to be doing its best to ignore community interests. Patrons of the Lake Forest Park, Richmond Beach and Shoreline libraries have to share their favorite librarians with other libraries, Meanwhile, a new library building in South King County will go not to the most convenient place for local residents but to the most convenient place for commuters. It’s an organization that emphasizes the strength of the system over the needs of the 43 community Libraries. It should follow the lead of the Sno-Isle System.

Let voters pick the candidates

Vice President Dick Cheney was in this state a few days ago to campaign for Republican candidates for Congress. Expect to see prominent Democrats to be here soon to campaign for their candidates.

Shouldn’t they wait until the September primary when we officially have Republican and Democratic candidates?

As things stand, the primary will be meaningless because the parties have scared off challengers to the anointed candidates with money and other support.

We can fight back in September by voting for token candidates to protest the actions of the two major parties.
