Todd, Hypse to face off for Council seat

There will be at least one race this fall for the Mill Creek City Council.
Mike Todd, recently appointed to the Council on an interim basis, has filed an intent with the state Public Disclosure Commission to run this fall for the seat he was appointed to, Position 6.
Former City Council member Steven Hypse has also filed with the state of his intent to run for Position 6. Hypse also applied this spring to fill the position on an interim basis.
Position 6 was held by John “Jack” Start, who passed away in April. Todd was appointed by the Council on May 24 to fill the seat through at least the end of the year, and the seat will appear on the ballot this fall, with the winner serving the remaining two years of Start’s term.
Hypse applied for the interim seat but lost out to Todd. Sources told The Enterprise that Hypse lost out on the position in part because during his interview, he criticized the current Council for not being more active in regional affairs.
In addition to Hypse and Todd, the only other person to file with the disclosure commission of an intent to run this fall is Mary Kay Voss, who holds Position 4 on the City Council.
All three declared candidates have already filed campaign spending forms with the disclosure commission. All three have committed to “mini-reporting,” in which a candidate vows to spend no more than $3,500 on their campaign and will not accept any donations larger than $300 from any contributor except themself.
A total of five seats on the Council are up for election this year. The official filing period with the Snohomish County Auditor’s Office is July 25-29.
