Winning a state championship creates a lifelong bond and unforgettable memories. It also generates a lot of attention and pressure to repeat.

Three games into its 2007 season, the Archbishop Murphy High School girls soccer team — the 2006 Class 2A state champion — doesn’t seem burdened by expectations. In fact, the Wildcats look hungrier and more focused than ever.

Spearheaded by an impressive array of young offensive standouts, Archbishop Murphy drilled the King’s Knights 8-0 Sept. 11 in the Cascade Conference opener for both teams at Archbishop Murphy High School.

Three underclassmen midfielders – sophomores Maddy Huggins (three goals) and Sammi Pettinger (two), and freshman Caroline Brawner (two) – combined to score seven times for Murphy, which improved its record to 3-0. The Wildcats scored four goals in the first 28 minutes and went on to complete their third shutout in three tries this month.

Archbishop Murphy dominated King’s (0-1-1), a second-year program that has six starters back from its 2006 squad that placed third in 1A.
