When it’s not enough to say you’re sorry

They’re all apologies in the news today:

Eliot Spitzer apologized again for a prostitution scandal as he resigned Wednesday as New York governor. Spitzer held his second painfully uncomfortable news conference with his wife at his side. On the bright side, he’s got a promising career ahead of him in those Southwest Airlines “Want to get away?” commercials.

Speaking of Southwest Airlines, it’s sorry, too. It had to ground 43 planes after missing inspections for cracks. The airline’s stock took a hit, but it’s all part of Southwest’s new “Take Your Chances” marketing campaign. It appeals to the same clientele as Eliot Spitzer’s favorite escort service.

And the U.S. government is considering a formal apology to American Indian tribes for all those years — OK, centuries — of mistreatment.

Tribal leaders say they aren’t impressed, but just wait until they see the size of the FTD “Sorry for Manifest Destiny” bouquet they’re getting.

Not to spoil any surprises, but it’s almost as big as the “Sorry I Had to Resign In Disgrace” bouquet on its way to a certain New Yorker’s special lady today.
