Library group to award grants

The Friends of the Mill Creek Library will award grants of up to $2,000 to defray professional development costs of literacy education or the expansion of literacy services in the community.
Proposed projects may include seminars, courses, conference attendance or other continuing education endeavors that support professional development.
Individuals should be actively engaged in the provision of literacy services or literacy education.
Applicants must live, work, or otherwise have ties to the greater Mill Creek area.
Interested applicants must mail a resume and cover letter detailing interest in the grant postmarked by April 15 to the Friends of the Mill Creek Library at 15429 Bothell-Everett Highway in Mill Creek, Wash. 98012. For more information call 425-337-4822.
Senior social to take place April 4
Community members are invited to the Mill Creek Senior Center’s Social and Resource Fair at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 4 at the Washington State University Extension Center at McCollum Park in South Everett.
The event is an opportunity for seniors to meet new people and learn about the services and activities available through the senior center, including fitness, computer and support classes.
There also will be a presentation on an effort to get a permanent center for local seniors. For more information or to register, call 425-357-6002.
Volunteers needed for Earth Day event
Mill Creek will have an Earth Day volunteer event from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, April 19.
Volunteers may choose from the following list of activities: installing storm drain markers along Mill Creek Boulevard and Main Street, Trash and recycle detail along the sidewalks on State Route 527 or Planting trees and shrubs along North Creek Trail.
Volunteers must sign up with project managers at 9 a.m. in the City Hall parking lot.
All supplies and equipment will be provided. Children younger than 14 shall be accompanied by their parent.

Senior center cares for caregivers
The family caregivers program at the Mill Creek Senior Center invites local caregivers to utilize the center’s free counseling and consultation services.
Counselors are available to guide people through the challenges of caring for their loved ones. The senior center also provides a bimonthly support group for caregivers.
Caregivers often fall into patterns of self neglect, ignoring their own health issues as stresses build up. They feel guilty and resentful. They start to experience mood and health changes.
The Family Caregivers Program offers is part of the Mill Creek Senior Center, located in McCollum Park.

Author to visit Mill Creek Book Store
Children’s book author Bonny Becker will read from her book, “A Visitor for Bear,” at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 10 at the University Book Store in Mill Creek.

‘Think Green’ in Mill Creek
Mill Creek City Councilwoman Donna Michelson is having an electronics recycling event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at City Hall.
Total Reclaim Inc. will collect computers, TVs, stereos, refrigerators and other items.
Collection fees will range from $5 to $25 and must be paid in cash. Cell phones, keyboards, computer mice, and telephones can be dropped off for free.
Red Cross to honor local volunteers
The Snohomish County chapter of Red Cross is seeking Humanitarian Award nominees for the chapter’s second annual recognition event scheduled for May 8.
The awards are given for outstanding involvement and dedication of volunteer service resulting in the enrichment of the lives of others and the welfare of humanity. Categories are adult, family or group, and youth.
Nominees must be connected to the county through residence, employment or military assignment.
Nomination forms are available at the Web site by visiting www.snohomishcounty.redcross.org. Forms can also be picked up at the Red Cross office at 2530 Lombard Ave. in Everett.
