LIONS: Detroit fired Matt Millen seven-plus years after the acclaimed TV analyst and Super Bowl-winning linebacker took over as team president for one of the NFL’s mediocre franchises and made it the worst. Millen’s teams won a league-low 31 games since he took over in 2001.

RAMS: St. Louis released cornerback Fakhir Brown, a starter the previous two seasons but hampered by injuries this year.

GIANTS: Dick Lynch, who starred at cornerback for the New York Giants during their glory years in the late 1950s and early 1960s and was a longtime radio analyst for the team, has died. He was 72.

BUCCANEERS: Matthew Tryson Bryant, the 3-month-old son of Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Matt Bryant, died Wednesday. “I don’t have a lot of details,” coach Jon Gruden said after practice. “It’s just a horrible tragedy, and I can’t explain it.”

PACKERS: Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy says cornerback Al Harris has a “serious” spleen injury that requires a cautious approach. But he’s not yet ruling out one of the team’s top defensive players for the rest of the season.

BILLS: Buffalo receiver Roscoe Parrish will miss four to six weeks after having surgery to repair ligament damage in his right thumb.

SAINTS: New Orleans released reserve quarterback Joey Harrington, only five days after signing him. The Saints signed tight end Sean Ryan to compensate for the loss of Jeremy Shockey to a sports hernia.

PANTHERS: Carolina re-signed linebacker Donte Curry to replace the injured Dan Connor.

DOLPHINS: Outside linebackers coach Jim Reid left the team’s training facility in an ambulance after experiencing lightheadedness after practice.

COLTS: Indianapolis signed ex-Seahawk David Greene, the former Georgia quarterback who broke Peyton Manning’s NCAA major college record for victories and finished his college career as the SEC’s leader in yards passing. Seattle took Greene in the third round of the 2005 NFL draft. He spent two seasons with the Seahawks but never threw a pass. Greene signed with the Patriots, where he was on the practice squad, before signing with Kansas City. The Chiefs released him in July.

JETS: Brett Favre was uncertain how limited he’ll be by a sore ankle during practices this week. “He’s going to go out and work, and I anticipate him playing on Sunday,” coach Eric Mangini said.

CHIEFS: Coach Herm Edwards said that Damon Huard, the 12-year veteran backup, will start at quarterback against the unbeaten Denver Broncos.

BROWNS: Quarterback Derek Anderson, who was ineffective during the Browns’ three-game losing streak, will start Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Coach Romeo Crennel considered benching Anderson for popular second-year backup Brady Quinn.
