49ERS: San Francisco will retire Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young’s No. 8 jersey in a halftime ceremony during their game against New England on Oct. 5. Young is a two-time league MVP who led San Francisco to its fifth NFL title in the 1995 Super Bowl, winning the game’s MVP award with a record six touchdown passes. He spent parts of 13 seasons with the 49ers, finishing his NFL career with 33,124 yards passing and 232 TD passes.

CARDINALS: Arizona defensive end Bertrand Berry will miss Sunday’s game at the New York Jets with a groin tear. Coach Ken Whisenhunt was uncertain how long Berry will be sidelined.

CHARGERS: While six players — five of them Pro Bowl players — sat out Wednesday’s workout with various ailments, they returned Thursday as the Chargers continue preparations for Sunday’s game at the Oakland Raiders. Running back LaDainian Tomlinson (toe), center Nick Hardwick (foot), tight end Antonio Gates (hip), defensive tackle Jamal Williams (knees), left guard Kris Dielman (thigh) and center Jeremy Newberry (knee) went through the whole practice.

TITANS: Tennessee is making a change at middle linebacker, where Stephen Tulloch is replacing Ryan Fowler. The Titans (3-0) signed Fowler away from Dallas as a restricted free agent in March 2007.

PATRIOTS: Troy Brown retired Thursday after 15 seasons with New England in which he set a team record for most receptions. Brown spent his entire NFL career with the Patriots after they drafted him in the eighth round in 1993 out of Marshall. His 557 catches are first in team history and his 6,366 yards receiving are second to Stanley Morgan’s 10,352. Brown played in one Pro Bowl, after the 2001 season.

RAVENS: When Baltimore strong safety Dawan Landry felt his toes wiggle after suffering a scary spinal cord concussion Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, he was fairly certain he was going to be all right.

Landry has returned to the Ravens’ training complex for treatment and remains in a cervical collar after being released from Maryland Shock Trauma. He’s expected to play again this year.

A CT scan and an MRI didn’t reveal any fractures. Landry never lost consciousness while he was down on the ground for roughly 10 minutes during the final minute of the first half before being carted off the field and taken to the hospital.

Landry is expected to wear the cervical collar for another week and then return to the doctor to be evaluated before he begins rehabilitating his injury. There is no specific timetable for his return.

JETS: Brett Favre walked with only a slight limp as the New York quarterback continued to recover from a twisted left ankle. The 38-year-old Favre, injured Monday night in New York’s loss at San Diego, had his ankle tightly wrapped and appeared to walk comfortably through the locker room before practice.

BENSON: Former Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson won’t face charges for two alcohol-related arrests earlier this year, officials in Texas said Thursday. Two Travis County grand juries declined to indict Benson on charges of boating while intoxicated, resisting arrest and driving while intoxicated.
