‘I.O.U.S.A.’

Tag-lined “One Nation. Under Stress. In Debt,” the documentary “I.O.U.S.A.” seems particularly well-timed. According to its Web site, the movie boldly examines the rapidly growing national debt and its consequences for the United States and its citizens. Wielding candid interviews with both average American taxpayers and government officials, director Patrick Creadon helps demystify the nation’s financial practices and policies. The film follows former U.S. Comptroller General David Walker as he crisscrosses the country explaining America’s unsustainable fiscal policies to its citizens. Creadon uses candid interviews with Warren Buffett, Alan Greenspan, Paul O’Neill, Robert Rubin and Paul Volcker, among others, to examine the crisis. The Los Angeles Times’ Kenneth Turan in January called the film “… (the) most unexpectedly frightening movie in the (Sundance) festival.” The documentary, rated PG-13, opens today at the Uptown.
