Camano Island community meeting
Island County Sheriff Mark Brown plans a community outreach meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Camano Senior and Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Road.
Brown’s topic is the future of the Island County Sheriff’s Office.
Specifically, he plans to discuss manpower issues, crime statistics and budget requests for the coming year.
He plans to discuss the needs of the community in terms of categorizing the calls coming into the 911 center and how they translate into priority law enforcement response. Those who attend can give input to the sheriff about what they think is important in terms of public safety for Camano Island.
“I recognize the challenges we face in government with a struggling economy and realize the difficult choices in the future on how to best deal with these challenges,” Brown said. “I firmly believe, however, it is my duty to maintain the level of service expected by the citizens of Island County.”
Learn best techniques for tree planting
Fall is a great time to plant trees.
A class that offers suggestions for tree selection and proper planting techniques is 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 N. East Camano Drive.
Arborist Zsofia Pastor also plans to talk about how to create a natural landscape and use sustainable gardening practices.
The presentation is part of a series by the Camano Wildlife Habitat Project, sponsored by Friends of Camano Island Parks.

Lake Stevens
City to discuss priorities for upcoming Legislature
The Lake Stevens City Council is planning a discussion on Monday of its priorities for January’s session of the state Legislature.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Lake Stevens School District Educational Services Center, 12309 22nd St. NE.

Group plans Fall Art Gala show and sale
Art will be displayed and available for sale at the Lake Stevens Arts Commission’s Fall Art Gala and Chamber Mixer, planned for Oct. 22.
The free event is scheduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Atrium, next to the Greater Lake Stevens Chamber of Commerce office at 9327 Fourth St. NE, Suite 7.
Also planned for the evening are wine tasting and sales, other refreshments, and entertainment by Con Brio, a classical string ensemble.

Sky Valley Food bank seeks donations
The Sky Valley Food Bank is seeking donations as it struggles to meet the increasing demand for service. As food prices have soared with the slow economy, more people are counting on the food bank, according to Julie Morris, director of the food bank.
In August, the food bank gave out food 4,130 times, which equals 41,300 meals. The nonprofit organization used to pay about $3,500 for its food bill per month. But in July, food cost the organization more than $8,300.

Snohomish
Art topic at tonight’s Garden Club meeting
The Snohomish Garden Club is set to meet at 7 p.m. today in the Snohomish High School cafeteria at 1316 Fifth St. This meeting is open to the public; there is a $5 fee for nonmembers. The meeting features Anita Halstead speaking on art in the garden. Halstead has been an arts educator and creativity consultant for more than 30 years.
Garden club meetings are on the second Monday of the month from September through May, and annual dues are $20 per person.
