Prep volleyball/soccer: King’s keeps record perfect

DUVALL — The Cedarcrest volleyball team served up a strong offensive game at Cedarcrest High School Thursday but it wasn’t enough to slow down King’s, which cruised to a 3-0 Cascade Conference victory, keeping its undefeated season intact. The Knights swept the match 25-22, 25-23, 25-18.

“(Cedarcrest) played hard and put us to the test,” King’s head coach Steve Bain said. “Luckily, our kids did a good job at responding and closing the games out.”

Setter Anna Cesari led King’s (10-0 overall) with 35 assists and teammates Laura Friar and Dionna Kirton added nine and 12 kills, respectively, to boost the Knights over Cedarcrest.

“We played much better tonight than when we played King’s earlier in the season,” said Cedarcrest head coach Christine Hillestad, referring to its 3-0 loss on Sept. 23. “Even though we lost (tonight), the girls played really hard.”

Lindsey Smith had three aces and 15 assists for the Red Wolves. Sara Houser (five kills, 10 digs), Shannon Bailey (six kills, five digs) and Crystal Canady (11 digs) each had great games for Cedarcrest (6-3 in league, 7-3 overall).

“King’s is a strong team,” said Hillestad. “I expect to see them go far in the postseason.”

Archbishop Murphy 3, Coupeville 1: At Coupeville, outside hitter Becca Gotz had nine kills and nine aces to lead the Wildcats (8-1 in league and overall) to a 25-23, 25-11, 23-25, 25-18 victory over the Wolves (2-8, 3-8) in Cascade Conference action. Ashley Broadwell added nine kills as well for Archbishop Murphy. Senior Linde Maertens had 11 kills for Coupeville and setter Julie Huddleston added 20 assists and was 15-for-15 on serves.

Lakewood 3, Granite Falls 2: At Marysville, Peyton Micell set a Lakewood record with 45 assists and Liliya Kibitskaya added 13 digs and 17 kills en route to a 17-25, 25-21, 25-20, 19-25, 15-10 Lakewood victory. Erika Smith had a standout game for Granite Falls, tallying 11 kills and seven aces. Brianna Johnson contributed 16 digs for Granite Falls, which fell to 2-7 in the Cascade Conference, and 2-7 overall. Kaylee Diggs smashed 18 kills for the Cougars, who improved to 3-6, 3-6.

South Whidbey 3, Sultan 0: At Langley, Allison Wood of South Whidbey had a match-leading 13 kills as well as 10 digs in the Cascade Conference victory. Lindsey Newman added 12 kills for South Whidbey (5-4 league and overall), Brittany Wood had eight digs and Kelsey Dorpat had eight digs and 22 assists. Cassie Beucherie of Sultan (0-8) had seven blocks and Kendra Kirk had five digs.

Edmonds-Woodway 3, Mariner 0: At Edmonds, junior Leigh Fishback had 15 assists and served the first 15 points of Game 2 as the Warriors (4-0 in league, 7-2 overall) blanked the Marauders (0-4, 0-9) 25-5, 25-4, 25-22 in Wesco South action. Haley Lemm had 14 assists for E-W, senior Cailin Fellows added nine kills and three aces and Marisa Wellington chipped in with nine kills and two aces.

Shorecrest 3, Lynnwood 0: At Shoreline, Jamie McDonald had 11 kills and three blocks and Kerry Clavadetscher had four kills, 13 assists and three aces to pace Shorecrest (3-1 league, 5-3 overall) to a 25-18, 25-13, 25-11 Wesco South victory. Laycee Hill had 11 assists and Kelsey Parker had 13 digs to lead Lynnwood (1-3, 5-4).

Jackson 3, Glacier Peak 1: At Mill Creek, after winning the first set 25-13, Jackson dropped the second set 21-25 before taking the next two sets 25-14, 25-17 to close out the Wesco South match. Christy Cain led the Timberwolves (3-1 in league, 4-5 overall) with 15 kills, five blocks and three aces and sophomore Leigh-Ann Haataja added 10 kills and four aces. Jackie Eagon had eight kills, three blocks and a dig, Taylor Rasmussen had 14 digs and Richelle Hoover had eight assists for Glacier Peak (0-4, 0-9).

Meadowdale 3, Shorewood 1: At Lynnwood, Lynsey Rohrback had 16 kills and Alexa Cannon had 10 kills to lead Meadowdale to the 25-14, 17-25, 25-22, 25-20 Wesco South victory over Shorewood (0-4 in league, 3-6 overall). Megan Nelson had 40 assists and 13 digs and teammate Mara Eberth added 13 digs and six aces for the Mavericks (3-1, 4-5). Kelsey England had nine kills and three blocks, Ashley Baker had seven kills and 18 digs, Laura Postor had 22 digs, Carolyn Stransky had 14 digs and 11 assists and Erin Hill had 11 digs and 13 assists for Shorewood.

Kamiak 3, Mountlake Terrace 0: At Mukilteo, Bailey Jones had 21 kills and 10 blocks in the 25-18, 25-22, 25-16 Wesco South victory. Jessica Ramos had 15 digs for Kamiak and Bryce Larson added 14 kills. Ally Bowes had 20 assists for Kamiak (3-1 league, 7-1 overall). Mountlake Terrace is now 3-1, 5-4.

Darrington 3, Mt. Vernon Christian 0: At Mt. Vernon, Darrington scored on 16 of 22 serves by Kalynn Nations, who had 12 service aces in the Loggers 25-14, 25-16, 25-23 Northwest 1A/2B League defeat of Mt. Vernon Christian. Mandy Powell had 10 kills and 18 digs for Darrington (7-1 league, 7-3 overall).

Lummi 3, Highland Christian 0: At Bellingham, Lummi (1-2 league, 3-3 overall) defeated Highland Christian (2-1, 4-6) 25-20, 25-22, 25-16.

Girls soccer

Arlington 3, Snohomish 1: At Arlington, Sadie Hitsky scored on a Mackie Adell assist just five minutes into the Wesco North game and Arlington (6-4-3) scored twice more in the second half. Shelby Beeman scored the lone goal for Snohomish (5-7-0) at the nine-minute mark. Jessica Vanloo and Mackie Adell each scored goals for Arlington during the second half and Chelsea Boulton played goalie for the Eagles.

Lake Stevens 1, Monroe 0 (OT): At Lake Stevens, junior Kinslee Isaman knocked home a pass from forward Taryn Wright in the 87th minute to break the scoreless tie and give the Vikings (10-2) the Wesco North victory over the Bearcats (5-4-3). Goalkeeper Kaitlin McKenzie notched her sixth shutout of the season for Lake Stevens.

Stanwood 1, Cascade 1: At Everett, Stanwood scored on an own goal by Cascade in the 44th minute and the score remained that way until Ricki Cullem scored in the 64th minute for the Bruins to force the draw in the Wesco North game. Haley Haugstad was the goalkeeper for the Spartans (5-3-4 in league and overall) while Whitney Hawthorne and Jessie Anderson split time in goal for Cascade (3-6-3).

Everett 7, Oak Harbor 1: At Oak Harbor, Everett scored from start to finish and had a strong showing by goalie Emily Nesting in the Wesco North game. Alysia Letourneau and Annie Sittauer scored two goals apiece for Everett, which remained in first place at 10-1-1. Hannah Hawkins and Sele Vance each had a goal and assist, Brittany McMullen scored and Suzy Olsen, Cammie Monro and Madison Taylor added assists. Carson McKole scored on a penalty kick for Oak Harbor, which dropped to 1-11-1.

Shorecrest 2, Lynnwood 0: At Lynnwood, Agen Heffernan scored in the 66th minute to break up a scoreless battle and Lulu Wissmar added another goal for Shorecrest in the Wesco South game. Caroline Towles played goalie for Shorecrest, which improved to 3-2 in league and 7-3-2 overall. Lynnwood is 0-4 and 0-11-1.

Kamiak 4, Mountlake Terrace 0: At Edmonds, Kamiak scored three goals in the first 20 minutes of the Wesco South game and Tana Foster got the shutout at goalie as the Knights played in their third game of the week. Cara Munoz scored the first goal and Taylor Stanley scored the next two for Kamiak (4-1, 6-4-2). Lauren Luke had two assists, including one on Kamiak’s last goal by Rachel Rinke. Mountlake Terrace dropped to 2-3, 2-10.

Edmonds-Woodway 4, Mariner 0: At Everett, Lauren Previs, Carlin Huegli, Jackie Vandermeer and Katherine Amsden each scored a goal in Edmonds-Woodway’s (1-4-0 in league, 5-6-1 overall) Wesco South win over Mariner (0-5-0, 0-11-1).

Jackson 3, Glacier Peak 1: At Snohomish, Jackson received unassisted goals from Brianna Ellis, Lori Deland and Danae Fitz to take the Wesco South victory over Glacier Peak (5-6-1). Miranda Granger scored Glacier Peak’s lone goal off an assist from Malloy Leahy. K.C. Wilson started in goal for Jackson (10-1-0) and Nicole Giovine started in goal for Glacier Peak.

Granite Falls 4, Cedarcrest 3 (shootout): At Granite Falls, Cedarcrest trailed 3-1 with 20 minutes remaining and scored twice in that time, ultimately tying the score with five minutes remaining and forcing a shootout. Maggie Pleis had all three Cedarcrest (7-4 league, 8-4 overall) goals in the Cascade Conference game. In regulation, Kaitlin Howell scored the first Tigers (7-4, 8-4) goal, followed by Sarah Hensley and Cacia Stevens. In the shootout, Howell scored the first goal, Kassie Hourner scored the second and Katie Cashman, who had an assist in regulation, scored the game-winner. Claire O’Donnell and Brooke Chapman scored goals for Cedarcrest in the shootout. Granite Falls’ goalie was Kelsey Carlson and Cedarcrest’s was Kori Butterfield.

Coupeville 3, Sultan 2: At Sultan, Courtney Boyd, Caitlin Phillips and Lexi Hemphill each scored a goal to lead Coupeville to the Cascade Conference victory. Joelle Anthony started in goal for Coupeville (2-9 league, 2-11 overall). Sultan (0-10, 0-13), which received goals from Rici Morrill and Andi Hastings, started Emily Dir in goal.

Archbishop Murphy 3, Lakewood 0: At Marysville, Brittany Allen struck first with a goal in the 14th minute and Sam Pettinger and Lindsey Bos followed her lead with one goal apiece to lead Archbishop Murphy to the Cascade Conference win. Alexa Hughes recorded the shutout for the Wildcats (10-1 in league, 11-1-1 overall). The goalkeeper for Lakewood (3-8, 4-9) was not reported.

South Whidbey 5, King’s 4: At Langley, Paige Miller scored three goals and Karissa Thomas added two for South Whidbey in the Cascade Conference victory. Hillary Zevenbergen scored all four goals for King’s (9-2 league, 11-2 overall). Natasha Kamps kept goal for South Whidbey (6-5). King’s goalie was not reported.

Boys soccer

Shoreline Christian 6, La Conner 1: At Shoreline, Michael Sohn and Travis Hudson each scored twice and Jason Vermeer and Ben Novion added goals as the Crusaders (3-0 in league, 5-4 overall) beat the Braves (0-1, 0-3) in Northwest 1A/2B action. Sohn, Hudson, Novion and Keith Jacobs all registered assists for Shoreline Christian and Sean Lidstrom and Calvin Bauman shared netminding duties.
