UW vs. Cal game thread

Cal 31, UW 0, halftime
Cal go the ball back with 33 second left on its own 11, but a simple handoff to Jahvid best went 53 yards, and four plays later, Cal had another touchdown in what is just an awful showing for the UW.
The Huskies had just 58 yards that half to 325 for Cal, and the UW turned the ball over four times. Best had 186 yards and three scores on 15 carries.
Word is that Ronnie Fouch has a concussion, and won’t return.
And as I was typing this, Best just broke off an 84-yard touchdown run as we start the third quarter, making it 38-0. He now has 270 yards on 16 carries.
Unless someone emails me (jboyle@heraldnet.com) and tells me they’re actually enjoying reading about this mess, we’re going to retire the game thread and just come back with some postgame notes. Any objections?
Fouch injured
As if things weren’t going badly enough for the Huskies already, Ronnie Fouch just left the game after taking a hard hit running the ball (a flag was thrown as he was hit going into a slide). Taylor Bean came into the game and threw an inteception three plays later. That’s four turnovers now for the Huskies.
Cal 24, Washington 0, 7:00 left in second quarter
This game can’t be over soon enough for the Huskies, who even without turning the ball over would be outmatched here. The Huskies are turning it over however, and doing so quite frequently. Ronnie Fouch has fumbled twice on sacks and also thrown a pick.
Jahvid best now has 133 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries, and simply has too much speed and two many moves for this defense to handle.
Cal 10, Washington 0, end of 1st quarter
Former Husky legend Napoleon Kaufman is on the UW sideline, and he can’t be liking what he’s seeing from his former team.
The Huskies are down 10-0, but it could be worse, as the Bears have settled for two short field goal attempts and missed one of those. Unofficially, the Bears have already rushed for 124 yards, while the Huskies have just one first down, which they got at the end of the quarter. That was also the first time Washington crossed midfield.
That was quick
After a UW three-and-out, Cal needed only two plays to take a 7-0 lead. Sophomore Jahvid best was held to two yards on his first carry, but exploded for 60 yards on his next carry for a touchdown. Dodn’t look like a single Husky even got a hand on him either.
Could be a long afternoon for the Huskies today.
PREGAME
We’re about 15 minutes away from kickoff here in Berkeley, and just as it has been for almost every Husky game, it’s a beautiful day. While the losses have been ugly all year for the Huskies, at least the weather hasn’t.
The big question as the Huskies prepare to play their last game under Tyrone Willingham is whether they bother showing up in what is a pretty meaningless game.
From the looks of things, the 0-11 Huskies aren’t much of a draw here in Berkeley, because Memorial Stadium is looking pretty empty just a few minutes before the start of the game.
One other link before kickoff, Herald Seahawks beat reporter Scott Johnson caught up with former USC defensive end Lawrence Jackson, who thinks Steve Sarkisian will be a good fit for Washington.
Be back soon with updates on the game.
