Former Everett pastor writes, publishes book

Published 10:18 pm Friday, December 26, 2008

The former pastor of Everett’s First Presbyterian Church, Edwin Coon, recently wrote and published “Steeple on the Hill,” a book about the history of the First Presbyterian Church in Everett. Coon plans to be on hand following the 11 a.m. Sunday service on Jan. 11 to sign copies of his book.

Working with historian David Dilgard, Coon spent several years collecting and compiling information for the book, which provides a post-centennial history of the church. The 332-page book includes 311 photos and illustrations.

Coon, a minister emeritus of First Presbyterian Church, hails from New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley. In the book, Coon discusses how he answered God’s call to move to unknown territory, and how along the way, he found himself wrestling with his sense of self worth, his faith, his challenging relationships with the people of the church and even with his God.

Coon was ordained into ministry in the Reformed Church in America and served churches in New York State from 1959 to 1970. In 1970 Coon and his family moved across the country when Coon became senior minister of the Presbyterian Church in Whittier, Calif. In 1983 Coon began his work in Everett at First Presbyterian Church and continued there until he retired in 1996. Coon and his wife, Betty, have three married daughters and six grandchildren.

The book is $30.
