Prep boys basketball: Cold shooting dooms Mariner in loss to Foss
Published 10:55 pm Monday, December 29, 2008
FEDERAL WAY — Mariner lost its first game of the season Monday night at the Decatur tournament, falling to Foss 59-44.
The game was competitive at the half, with Foss clinging to a five-point lead. In the third quarter, Foss outscored Mariner 24-13 behind three 3-pointers in as many possesions.
“We had open shots, we just could not buy a bucket,” Mariner coach Dexter Griffen said.
“That Foss team is as good as the Franklin team we played in state two years ago. They are very good,” Griffen added.
Griffen was able to use this game as a measuring stick because Foss is considered one of the better 4A teams in the state.
“We knew we played a top-five team in the state and competed the whole game,” Griffen said.
He went on to say if it weren’t for an unusually bad shooting night for his team, the result might have been different.
Foss goes on to play the winner of Decatur and Tahoma Tuesday night for the tournament championship, while Mariner goes up against the loser in the consolation game.
