UW vs. Stanford game thread

UW 84, Stanford 83
What a game here at Hec Ed tonight, and the fans are going home happy after an 84-83 win over the Cardinal.
Stanford took a one-point lead with 14.4 seconds left when Anthony Goods drained a long two-pointer. Washington brought the ball across midcourt then called a timeout. Jon Brockman, who hadn’t made a field goal in the second half, got the game winner when he put back a Matthew Bryan-Amaning miss with 4.6 seconds left.
After Stanford called three timeouts and the UW one (yeah, it was a long break) the Cardinal finally ran a play in which a long pass was thrown to Landry Fields, but Justin Holiday was defending Fields close, and the ball got bobbled out of bounds last touching fields.
Brockman finished with 19 points and 18 rebounds.
UW up one, one minute left
After a Lawrence Hill free throw—who now has 9 points in the second half, by the way—it’s 82-81 with 1:01 remaining. If this goes to overtime, the team that avoids fould might be the victor, because there are currently six players on the court with four fouls, including Brockman and Thomas for the UW.
Huskies lead by two
It’s 78-76 Washington with 3:32 left in what is turning out to be a thrilling game. Brockman is back on the bench for Washington after picking up his fourth foul, though he has been struggling in the second half, missing all six of his field goal attempts. He does have 17 points and 15 rebounds though, so it’s not like he’s been the problem for Washington.
Isaiah Thomas now has 18 to lead the Huskies and Matthew Bryan-Amaning has 17.
Stanford 71, UW 70, 7:10 left in the game
Venoy Overton is going to shoot two after the break, so the Huskies may be in the lead soon. Washington had a nice run to get back in it, and has led by as many as three. Looks like we’re in for a good finish here.
Huskies keeping it close
After trailing by eight not too long ago, Washington has cut the lead to three at 64-61 with 11:47 to play, and the Huskies just got the ball back after a turnover.
One concern for Washington is that Brockman just picked up his third foul. Lorenzo Romar thought the foul should have been called on Venoy Overton, but the officials put the foul on Brockman. He went to the bench after the foul, but I doubt he’ll be gone long.
Stanford now up seven
There’s plenty of time left, but the Huskies are in danger of letting this one get away from them. Stanford is up 58-51 four minutes into the half, and Lawrence Hill is shooting a free-throw that if he makes it will make it an eight-point lead.
Washington has turned the ball over on three of its last five possessions, including two pretty bad passes on two of the last three.
Like I said, lot’s of time left, but Washington needs to get something going soon or Stanford might put this one away.
Stanford up by two at half
The first 18 minutes of the first half went pretty well for the Huskies, but Stanford finished on an 8-0 run to take a 49-47 lead into the locker room.
Stanford is shooting 56.3 percent from the field and 62.5 percent on threes, numbers that certainly can’t have Lorenzo Romar and his staff smiling in the locker room. The Huskies, as the often do, are winning the rebounding battle and are in this game largely due to a 13-4 lead in second-chance points.
Brockman leads Washington with 16 points and nine rebounds, Landry Fields has 11 points to lead Stanford, and Anthony Goods has 10 for the Cardinal.
Huskies lead 43-39
Looks like we’ve definitely got a shootout going here, as the UW and Stanford have combined for 82 points with almost four minutes still left in the first half.
As I mentioned earlier, Stanford doesn’t have an answer for Brockman short of fouling him or triple teaming him, and he now has 14 points and eight rebounds.
Matthew Bryran-Amaning has added 11 points, and Isaiah Thomas has 10.
Hec Ed rocking
The Huskies are on an 8-2 run and now lead 30-27 with 7:47 left in the half, and Isaiah Thomas is about to shoot a free throw to try to complete a three-point play.
The crowd is really into this one after a couple of tip-ins by Matthew Bryan-Amaning and Jon Brockman. Brockman now has 12 points and six rebounds, and the Huskies are out-rebounding Stanford 12-7.
And the free throw goes in, makie it 31-27 Huskies.
Close game early
Stanford is up 17-16 seven minutes into the game, as this could be the high scoring game it figured to be coming in. Jon Brockman and Isaiah Thomas each have seven points to lead the Huskies, and Anthony Goods has eight to lead Stanford.
With the Lopez twins gone, it doesn’t look like Stanford has anybody who will be able to stop Brockman, so he could be in for a big night.
PREGAME
Just a few minutes away from the Huskies’ Pac-10 home opener against Stanford. This will be a much different Stanford team that what you’ve seen lately. Not only are the 7-foot Lopez twins gone to the NBA, but the Cardinal are also playing a more up-tempo style under new head coach Johnny Dawkins.
Huskies are again going with a starting lineup of Brockman, Pondexter, Gant, Thomas and Dentmon. Elston Turner, who missed the WSU game with an ankle injury, is in uniform, but he isn’t expected to play today.
It’s not unusual to see high school players the Huskies are recruiting sitting behind the UW bench, and one of the state’s biggest recruits—both in size and ranking—Josh Smith of Kentwood, is here tonight.
