College FB: Campaign started to save WWU football

BELLINGHAM — Some alumni and former players have created a Web site to organize an effort to save football at Western Washington University.

The university announced Thursday that it is cutting football as a money-saving move to help stabilize the school’s 15 other intercollegiate athletic programs.

Former Western offensive lineman Josh Wright tells KPUG Radio that the new Web site — http://savewwufootball.com — was created by former Western quarterback Kirk Kriskovich.

Wright says he and other players have also contacted some legislative leaders in Olympia to look into ways to save the program.

Western began playing football in 1903 and fielded teams for 98 seasons, stopping briefly only during World Wars I and II. The Vikings put together a 383-380-34 record and competed at the NAIA and NCAA Division II level.
