President-elect Barack Obama is calling on Americans to join a day of service on Monday, Jan. 19, and a number of Edmonds community groups are answering the pledge.
Join representatives from the Allied Citizens of Edmonds (ACE), the Edmonds Backyard Wildlife Habitat Certification Project group (EBWH), Sustainable Edmonds , and others at 10:30 a.m. by removing invasive ivy from City Park.
Volunteers will remove a 100-foot by 100-foot patch of invasive ivy from the park.
A crew from Edmonds’ parks department will delineate the area for ivy removal with yellow tape and provide gloves, bags, and hand pruners for the volunteers. Of course, volunteers are welcome to bring their favorite gloves and tools, too.

The Edmonds City Council began its lengthy process to fill the vacancy left by former councilmember Deanna Dawson, who left for a job in Washington, D.C.
Nine 20-minute interviews were scheduled for the Jan. 13 council meeting, and 11 more were scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 17.
The council is scheduled to nominate one candidate to fill the opening at its Jan. 20 meeting.
Do you happen to have an extra pair of pocket-sized, or beginner’s binoculars laying around the house that you’re not using anymore?
If so, Edmonds Discovery Programs would love to get those out of your way. The city-organized group hosts several educational programs for schools and day camps during the spring, summer and fall that require the use of binoculars.
With a limited budget, Discovery Programs are not able to purchase enough to replace the worn out ones used for the past several years, but is looking for donated pairs.
