Lake Stevens rolls over Arlington

ARLINGTON — So far this season all the Lake Stevens wrestling team has done is prove time and time again that it is the class of the Wesco North Division, if not the whole state. The defending 4A state champs continued that dominance Thursday night, defeating Arlington 58-12.
Lake Stevens came into Arlington the top-ranked 4A team in the state in the coaches’ poll. Arlington was the upstart, coming into the meet with only one loss and only three seniors on its roster. It was Lake Stevens, in front of a large crowd of Arlington fans, which established experience would be a factor early on, jumping to a 15-0 lead.
Arlington then picked up a win at 160 pounds when Chris Myers won a confusing decision over Jake Welch. The match was originally awarded to Welch, before it was determined after the next match that a scoring error had been made and the match was then awarded to Myers.
Lake Stevens won the next two matches, before Matt Kratzer gave Arlington a charge at 215 pounds, scoring a pin over Kodi Dinh. Arlington’s Bryant Dickerson scored another victory at 285 pounds in a hotly contested match against Zach Teuber, winning 4-3 to get Arlington within 27-11.
Lake Stevens got control of the meet back after that, tearing off six straight wins to end the meet, kicked off by Joe Mae Alewine’s pin at 103 in just 34 seconds.
After a team point, which was taken away from Arlington for unsportsmanlike conduct, was re-awarded when it was determined the offender was a parent not a coach, making the final score 58-12.
“I knew there would be tough matches,” Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said. “I knew they would be tough at heavyweight, 40 (140 lbs.), and 60 (160 lbs.).”
Many Lake Stevens wrestlers moved up in weight class for this meet, including Kyle Johnson who wrestled at 145 pounds and got a win in just his second varsity appearance of the season. Johnson has been stuck behind other wrestlers this season and moving up at a school the caliber of Lake Stevens can be difficult.
“Its pretty hard, we have got a lot of depth in our program,” Johnson said.
Barnes had nothing but praise for Arlington after the meet.
“They show a lot of promise and they are a young team, so I think Arlington should be excited,” Barnes said.
Going into the meet Arlington coach Shaun Williams thought his team could get three wins, which it was able to accomplish.
“If my kids can realize that they can compete against them and score points against them, then there is no where to go but up,” Williams said.
Lake Stevens travels to Pennsylvania today to compete in the Final Four tournament. Lake Stevens will face Blair Academy, the nation’s top-ranked team on Saturday at 9 a.m.
